Things to Do in Milatos, Crete: A Complete Local Guide

Milatos Port Beach

Milatos is a quiet fishing village on Crete's north coast, and that is exactly its charm. There are no crowds, no big resorts and no rush: just a small harbour, pebble coves, seafood tavernas and a landscape of olive groves rolling up into the hills. It is also a very good base. Within an hour you can reach some of the best-known places in eastern Crete.

This guide gathers the best things to do in and around Milatos, with links to our full guides for each one.

In the village

Walk the harbour. The heart of Milatos is its small fishing harbour. Stroll along the water in the evening, watch the boats come in and choose a taverna for dinner. The village square nearby has cafés and a few shops, and the pace is slow in the best way.

Eat by the sea. Fresh fish and seafood are the main event here, along with Cretan classics such as dakos (barley rusk topped with tomato and feta), local cheeses and herbs from the hills. Ask what the catch of the day is, and order meze to share.

Milatos Cave

Just outside the village stands the most important historical site in the area. In 1823, during the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule, hundreds of villagers sheltered in this cave and many lost their lives. Today it is a quiet memorial with a small chapel inside. The walk up takes about 10–15 minutes, so bring a torch and sturdy shoes. Read our full guide to Milatos Cave before you go.

Beaches and swimming

The sea is never far. Limani, the little sandy beach inside the harbour, is calm and good for families. Next to it is the longer pebble beach of Milatos, and further west towards Sissi are quiet coves such as Avlaki. Heading east, Plaka and Voulisma offer clear water and golden sand. Our beach guide compares them all, with tips on shoes, wind and the best time to go.

Day trips from Milatos

Agios Nikolaos. Crete's most elegant seaside town has a round lake, a lively harbour, an archaeological museum and a good choice of restaurants. It makes an easy day out, with Lake Voulismeni at the centre.

Spinalonga. A short boat ride from Plaka or Elounda takes you to the Venetian island fortress that later became a leper colony. It is one of the most memorable visits in Crete. Our Spinalonga guide explains the boats, tickets and timing.

Ancient Lato and Kritsa. Just above Agios Nikolaos, Lato is a remarkable ancient hilltop city with views over the gulf. Nearby, Kritsa is a traditional mountain village known for embroidery, weaving and the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera. The two fit well into a single day.

The Lassithi Plateau. Drive up into the mountains to a high green plain dotted with windmills, then visit the Dikteon Cave, linked in myth to the birth of Zeus. It's a full day, and a very different side of Crete.

Malia and Potamos. The Minoan palace of Malia and the long sandy beach at Potamos are both a short drive to the west, so they suit a flexible half-day.

Active and local experiences

If you want more than beaches and sightseeing, the hills behind Milatos have walking routes, and the area has olive oil producers, wineries and jeep or buggy safaris that go into the countryside. These are easiest to arrange once you're here, and we're happy to suggest options.

When to visit

Spring (April and May) brings wildflowers and mild weather, which is ideal for walking, the cave and the archaeological sites. Summer is the time for swimming and long harbour dinners, and September keeps the sea warm with fewer people around.
