Milatos or Sissi? Where to Stay in Eastern Crete

Sissi Port & Beach

Planning a holiday on Crete's north coast, east of Heraklion? You'll keep seeing two names: Sissi and Milatos. They are about 8 km apart, they share the same sea, and both are around 40 minutes from the airport. But they feel different. Here is a simple comparison to help you choose.

The short answer

Choose Milatos if you want a quiet, traditional village and a private holiday. Choose Sissi if you want more restaurants, shops and activity close by. Both are good bases for the same day trips.

Milatos: quiet and traditional

Milatos is a place to slow down. It has a small fishing harbour, seafood tavernas, and only a few essential shops, so bigger supermarket trips mean a short drive. Milatos Cave, a memorial from the 1823 revolt, is just outside the village. Traffic and noise are minimal.

Milatos suits you if you want calm, privacy and an authentic village, and you're happy to drive for day trips.

Sissi: a small harbour with more choice

Sissi is a harbour village at the end of a winding road, once a Venetian port. It has a sheltered cove, and nearby beaches such as Boufos have sunbeds and a small bar, while Good Morning Beach has shallow water that children like. There are more tavernas, cafés and bars than in Milatos, and many more hotels and apartments, so summer evenings feel livelier.

Sissi suits you if you want to walk to restaurants and shops and like having more going on around you.

Beaches

Both areas have good swimming close by. Milatos has a sandy harbour beach and a long pebble beach. Sissi has more sand and more organised beaches. They are only about 8 km apart, so you can visit both easily.

Food and evenings

In Milatos you eat at harbour tavernas: fewer choices, but fresh and local. Sissi has a wider range of restaurants and bars. Malia, about 15 minutes from either village, has the area's main nightlife. If you want quiet evenings by the sea, Milatos fits better. If you want a livelier atmosphere, Sissi does.

Day trips

The two villages share the same excursions. Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga, Ancient Lato, Kritsa, the Lassithi Plateau, Malia and Heraklion are all within easy reach of either one. Neither is clearly better for sightseeing, so the decision comes down to atmosphere.

Why choose a villa in Milatos?

A private villa gives you what a hotel can't: space, privacy and a garden of your own. At Garden Villas Milatos, Pakio Villa and Douloumi Villa sit in a peaceful village with the sea close by. Douloumi Villa sleeps up to three guests, with one bedroom, one bathroom, a private pool and garden, and it is about 1 km from the beach.
