Heraklion Airport to Milatos: How to Get to Your Villa

The journey from Heraklion Airport to Milatos is short and easy. Most guests reach Pakio Villa or Douloumi Villa in under an hour, along a scenic road on Crete's north coast. This guide covers your main options so you can arrive relaxed and start your holiday straight away.

The short version

  • Distance: About 45 km from the airport.

  • Drive time: Around 40–45 minutes in normal traffic.

  • Route: Leave the airport and join the main national road east towards Agios Nikolaos (the E75). Follow it past Malia and the Sissi turn-off, then continue to Milatos.

Option 1: Private transfer or taxi

This is the easiest choice after a flight, especially with luggage or children. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to the villa, with no navigation and no parking to worry about. Booking ahead guarantees a car, and a standard car fits up to three guests, which suits our villas well. Taxis are also available at the airport, but they're usually pricier than a pre-booked fixed fare for this distance.

Option 2: Rent a car

Renting a car is our top tip if you want to explore. Milatos is a quiet village, and the best places nearby (Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga, the beaches around Sissi and Plaka, Milatos Cave) are all easiest to reach by car. Collect it at the airport, and the drive to the villa is straightforward.

  • Book early for July and August, and ask for air conditioning.

  • Check that the rental includes insurance and a full-to-full fuel policy.

  • If you plan to visit beaches or the cave, a small, easy-to-park car is best on narrow roads.

Option 3: Public bus

You can reach this part of Crete by KTEL bus, but it takes longer and has a few steps. From the airport, you first travel to Heraklion's main bus station, then take a bus east towards Sissi. From the Sissi area you'd need a short taxi ride to Milatos. It's the cheapest option, but allow well over an hour and a half in total, and check timetables in advance, since services change by season.

Before you arrive

  • Groceries: Malia and Neapoli both have supermarkets, about a 10-minute drive from Milatos. Stopping on the way saves a trip on your first evening, and Milatos also has a mini market near the beach.

  • Cash and cards: Most tavernas take cards, but carry a little cash for small harbour cafés.

  • Late arrival: Let us know your flight time so we can plan your welcome.

Leaving Crete

Allow around an hour for the drive back to the airport in summer, plus time for car return or check-in. If you have an early flight, book your transfer the evening before.
